The so-called great helmetwas often worn over a smaller, lighter helmet (e.g. a Hirnhaube). It was widespread throughout Central Europe in the Middle Ages, and numerous contemporary illustrations, miniatures and finds from Germany, Flanders, England, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, etc. attest to the popularity of this type of helmet. These helmets appeared at the time of the Crusades in the late 12th/early 13th century and were in common use among knights until the 14th century.
In order to stand out from the crowd and emphasize their status, kings often wore a pot helmet with a crown on the battlefield. This made it easier for them to be recognized by their own soldiers in the turmoil of battle and gave them special protection. The crown may also have offered the king the chance to be taken hostage and held for ransom instead of being killed immediately by the enemy.
The handmade, finely crafted medieval helmet we offer here is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and decorated with a riveted brass crown. The individual parts are all connected by steel rivets. The sight slits are each approx. 13 cm long, 0.5 to 1 cm wide and the many round cut-outs on the right-hand side provide the necessary air circulation.
The blackened interior has a leather inlay, and the adjustable chin strap made of brown, 3 mm thick leather is fitted with a brass buckle (with an antique finish).
This wearable, truly majestic helmet is suitable for light show combat, re-enactment, LARP, stage or TV/film and will make your transformation into a noble king simply perfect. Of course, it also makes an excellent decorative addition to any helmet collector's treasure trove.
