Gjermundbu helmet, Viking spectacle helmet with chain brim, 2 mm steel
This wearable Viking spectacle helmet with spike and short nose guard is a reconstruction of a helmet found in a burial mound at the Gjermundbu farm in the municipality of Ringerike, Norway. The Viking helmet is dated to the 9th/10th century, but its general appearance and especially the band fittings or clasps and the goggles show its close relationship to the Nordic crested helmets of the Vendel period, which preceded the Viking Age.
This replica is hand-forged from 2 mm steel. The round helmet bell, the clasps (a forehead band, a crown band and a band running from ear to ear) and the face guard are all connected by steel rivets. The blackened interior is fitted with an adjustable leather inlay attached to the helmet skull with rivets, and the chinstrap made of approx. 1 mm thick leather closes with a cord.
To protect the neck, the helmet has an attached, short chain brim (as remains of a brim can also be found on the original find). The 4-in-1 chain mesh consists of 1.2 mm thick, riveted round steel rings (mesh type RRR - Round Rings Riveted) with an inner diameter of approx. 8 mm. The rivet is attached directly to the lower edge of the bell.
An early medieval rivited plate helmet that will make your transformation into a proud Nordic warrior simply perfect! This helmet is also an excellent decorative addition to any helmet collector's treasure trove.
