Archery Schaller with visor

In the 15th century, the battle helmet known as the Schaller replaced the pelvic cap and became one of the most commonly worn helmets throughout Europe by the middle of the century. This type of helmet could be found in a wide variety of shapes and variations - from simple to elaborate, open or with a visor, with more or less pronounced neck protection, etc. - and was particularly popular in Italy, Germany, France and England. By the beginning of the Renaissance, it had finally developed into the burgonet (balaclava) of the 16th century.

The late medieval Schaller offered here was made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel. The helmet has a movable visor, which is decorated with a stylized brass cross and engraved leaf motifs. The folding visor is equipped with a rectangular, approx. 2 wide viewing slit, which not only ensures an adequate view, but also provides the necessary air circulation thanks to its pointed lower edge which extends forwards.

The inside is blackened and has a riveted, adjustable leather inlay. The black, 2 mm thick leather chin strap is fitted with a steel buckle.
