Due to the nobility's privilege to carry double-edged swords, the demand for a "civilian" defensive weapon grew in the increasingly self-sufficient cities.
The long knife was developed to circumvent this rule and stand up to the noble knights.
So the myth goes.
However, it may simply have been a good idea from a clever knifemaker to serve the growing market for self-defense.
Knifemakers were forbidden to make swords, as only blacksmiths were allowed to do so under guild law.
So the knifemakers simply made a very long knife, not like double-edged swords with a tang passing through the handle and a pommel attached at the end by rivets,
but with a single-edged blade and handle scales riveted to the tang, as was usual with knives.
The long knife made by our blacksmith has the following dimensions:
Total length: 74 cm
Blade length: 57 cm
Blade width at the hilt: 4 cm
Blade width at the front: 5 cm
Crossguard: 19 cm
Handle length: 15 cm
Weight: 1300 g
