The spear enjoyed great popularity in the Viking Age. The large number and variety of surviving examples suggests that spears were used more frequently than swords - as they were not only simpler, but also considerably cheaper to produce.

The so-called winged spear, which was mostly used as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Norsemen, is actually of Frankish-Carolingian origin. It was adopted by the Vikings and was used for both hunting and fighting until well into the High Middle Ages. The side wings or protrusions were intended to prevent the tip from penetrating too deeply when thrusting (which would have made it more difficult to pull out the spear) and offered an effective way of parrying enemy attacks in close combat.

This Carolingian-style winged spearhead is made of heat-treated EN45 carbon steel and is ideal for Viking and medieval settings (ca. 8th/9th century to 11th/12th century). It is approx. 28.5 cm long, has approx. 17.5 cm long cutting edges, and the blade, which tapers sharply from a broad base to a long, narrow point, is reinforced with a distinctive central rib that provides additional stability and greater penetrating power. The protruding wings on both sides of the spout are approx. 4 mm thick. Two holes allow you to attach it to a wooden shaft of your choice to create your very own Viking / early medieval spear. Delivery does not include shaft or mounting material.

Please note that this spearhead was primarily designed as a collector's item, decorative object or prop and is not suitable for show combat! The tip of the blade is not rounded and the edges are not sharpened, but ground.
