Morning star

The staff was made of wood, the star of velvet fabric with a foam filling. Originally, the morning star was a feared melee weapon with an iron ball studded with spikes. The spikes made the weapon look like a star, which gave it its name. The morning star was only given to experienced fighters, as improper handling could result in more injuries to oneself than to the opponent.
