Medieval shoes with single nailed soles in brown.

Shoes of this type were worn by all classes throughout the late Middle Ages and even earlier.

Manufactured using the nail-through method. Almost indistinguishable from a turn-stitched shoe, but much more stable in construction. The vegetable-tanned upper leather is very supple and extremely stable.

Finds of these medieval shoes can be found in many museums. Similar shoes were also found in earlier times. This type of shoe can also be found in the work "Shoes and Patterns" by Francis Grew and Margarethe de Neergaard, where it is dated to 1100-1450.

Medieval shoe data:
Upper leather thickness: approx. 2,5mm
Outsole thickness: min. 5mm
Upper: leather
Lining and / or insole: leather
Outsole: leather

For dyeing:
The offered shoe is dyed by hand with alcohol-based oil dye and then sealed.

In the Middle Ages, leather was dyed with vegetable dye.
The principle of this dyeing process, as with the oil dye used here, is that the dye is absorbed and not applied opaquely as with acrylic. For this reason, the dyeing - although produced with color pigments of synthetic origin - resembles a "medieval dyeing" much more than modern leather from the tannery.

Our dyeing method gives the shoe an unmistakable character with an antique look, as the pores of the natural leather material are different and the color is absorbed differently in some places.
Each pair of shoes is unique and a highlight for any medieval costume.

About the size:
If you want to wear the shoes with insoles and thick socks, you can choose the specified shoe size. You should then have enough room for insoles and socks. However, if you want to wear the shoes without insoles or with thin socks, we recommend choosing one size smaller than your street shoe size.

Scope of delivery:
1 pair of medieval shoes
