A gugel is an item of clothing that was worn very frequently from the late Middle Ages onwards. In principle, a gugel was a hood that also partially covered the shoulders and was usually made of wool or loden. Initially only worn by the common people, it was later adopted by the nobility, who, however, put the face opening over their heads like a headband and let the collar hang down over their ears.
