This painted round shield with its elaborate design and Vegvísir motif is the perfect accessory for your Viking garb. Whether for LARP events, re-enactments or as a stylish decoration, this shield will make you a hero on any battlefield.
The Viking shield is made from approx. 13 mm thick plywood and impresses with its detailed design. There is a large steel boss in the middle of the shield, which is securely fastened with four rivets and offers enough space even for stronger Viking hands.
The edge of the shield is covered with rawhide (parchment) and three riveted reinforcement strips on the back give the shield additional stability. The middle strip also serves as a handle and is wrapped in leather at the level of the shield hole for a comfortable grip.
The central motif of the Vegvísir ("signpost") shield is a magical sign or sigil (galdrastafir) of Icelandic origin. Its first concrete depiction comes from the Huld manuscript by Geir Vigfússon from 1860, in which it is written about the Vegvísir:
If this symbol is carried, the bearer shall not be lost in storm or wind, even if the path ahead is unknown.
Although there is no historical evidence for the use of the Vegvísir in the Viking Age, it is still considered a symbol of great significance today. In Germanic neo-paganism, it is interpreted as a representation of the nine worlds of Norse mythology and in modern everyday life it is used as a talisman to help its wearer weather the storms of life, even on unknown paths.
