The shepherd's clock
It is likely that the monk of Reichenau, Hermann the Lame (1013 - 1054), developed this type of sundial. They were very popular during the Middle Ages because they were robust and did not require a compass.
1) Turn the horizontal arm of the cross to the month (J for January; D for December). Column sundials like this one are always optimized for a specific geographical latitude - in the case of this shepherd's clock, it is approx. 48-50° north (Central Europe).
2) Orient the clock in the direction of the sun. The tip of the shadow shows you the WOZ (true local time) on the next engraved curve leading to the hour numbers - morning hours on the right, afternoon hours on the left. Supplied with a strap.
