This hood, also known as a coiffe, is made of sturdy canvas (sailcloth) and lined with a light cotton fabric. The sturdy fabric makes the hood particularly suitable for wearing under a chain hood. It fits snugly on the head and covers the hair. It can be fastened under the chin with two ribbons.
In the Middle Ages, it was common for both sexes to wear headgear. Waistband hoods of this type were predominantly popular with men and children of all classes.
The lower classes wore them at work, the middle classes often wore them as an undergarment and the actual headdress on top, knights wore them under their chain hood and kings wore them under their crown. The hood was also used as protection against lice. It was part of the undergarment, as many historical depictions show, for example in the Rutland Psalter or in the Maciejowski Bible.
