Hospitaliter / Johanniter tunic

The black tunic with the white cross identifies the wearer as a member of the Hospitaller / Hospitaller Order.

At the beginning of the 13th century, members of the Order wore the black tunic with the white cross for the armed protection of pilgrims and for fighting in the crusade areas. From the middle of the 13th century, the red tunic came into use.
