Our Viking coat is made from sturdy cotton fabric. The torso section is lined on the inside. The coat is cut wide so that it can be worn comfortably in an "onion look". The overall length ends just above the knee and thus corresponds to the depictions of the early Middle Ages.
The flap skirt was originally a garment of the Eurasian equestrian peoples (including the Huns and Avars) and was brought to the West during the Migration Period and the Early Middle Ages. The Vikings and Rus adopted this type of coat or jacket and decorated it with their own board-woven bands. Typical of the Nordic flap skirt are the triangular flaps at the front, which are folded over each other and held in place by a belt.
Historical depictions of flap skirts can be found, for example, on the helmets of Sutton Hoo and Valsgärde from the 7th century. Several fragments of such Viking cloaks have also been found in the Viking Age settlement of Haithabu, the most important Viking trading center in Jutland (near Schleswig). The flap coat was combined with a tunic and pluderhose. Warrior depictions on preserved helmets suggest that it was not only worn in everyday life, but also in battle.
