This medieval velvet dress is cut close to the body and flared in the skirt section. The so-called Geren (fabric wedges) inserted in the skirt create the generous hem width, which makes the dress swing beautifully when walking.
The sleeves are cut wide and are gathered by wide cuffs. The neckline and cuffs are trimmed with satin piping and the center front is buttoned with numerous metal buttons in an antique brass look. Buttons are also attached to the cuffs. The floor-length dress looks very elegant thanks to the heavy cotton velvet and the subtle details underline this look.

The cut of the dress is based on medieval depictions from the 13th to 15th centuries. While women's garments before this time tended to be loose-fitting and hid the shape of the body, clothing now became more body-hugging. The cotehardie, which originally developed in France from the loose cotte, probably owes its name to this close-fitting cut.

Typical for a cotehardie are lacings or a button placket at the center front. Buttons first appeared at this time and finally made a tight fit possible. The numerous buttons were placed very tightly so that they did not pop open when worn tightly. The ever-widening neckline was also characteristic of these dresses and very popular with women in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The cotehardie was usually combined with an underdress, a veil and a narrow belt.

Depictions of a cotehardie from this period can be found, for example, in the Romance of the Rose, an old French verse novel from the 13th century (original title: Le Roman de la Rose), or in the Speculum humanae salvationis, a Christian book of edification (known as the Mirror of Salvation) from the early 14th century. The dress found on the moors of Moy, Ireland, which is dated to between the 14th and 15th centuries, is also a cotehardie with numerous buttons.

Velvet appeared in the Mediterranean region in the 14th century and was mainly woven in Italy. The elaborate design and the fact that this fabric was mostly made of silk made velvet robes into exclusive items of clothing. Velvet was very popular in Burgundian fashion during the Renaissance.
