Strap dresses were an integral part of Viking costume. These overdresses were essentially characterized by their straps and simple tube shape. Such dresses were available with slits, with pleats and as versions that overlapped at the center front. The hem ended at calf height.
The Viking Age strap dress had two different functions. While the plain version was worn like an apron to protect the garment, the decorated version was more of a status symbol and was adorned with braids, embroidery, chains and shell brooches. This form of dress is historically documented by finds from Haithabu and depictions from Birka.
Our single-colored slip dress is made of sturdy canvas (100% cotton) and is therefore very robust. It has a loose fit, laces up at the side and is kept simple.
