The older and younger Edda and the mythical tales of the Skalda
Liederedda and Snorra-Edda together form our most important source for Old Norse mythology. One must not be used and read without the other. The Song Edda brings together tales of gods and heroes, some of which date back to the 9th century. They depict legendary events from Iceland, Norway and Greenland during the so-called Viking Age. The younger Edda was originally a textbook for young singers, skalds, to teach them the basics of their art. With its examples from contemporary and old songs, it is now an invaluable treasure trove for Nordic-Germanic mythology, which had long since been suppressed in Germany.
