The texts of the Edda are the template for almost all the surviving Germanic sagas of the gods. Without the writings of the Prose and Song Edda, which are published in this volume, we would know almost nothing about the world of the Germanic gods, about Odin and Thor, Loki and Baldur, the sun god he murdered, about Fenrir the wolf and the Midgard serpent. We would know nothing about the castle of the gods Asgard or the dark realm of Hel, nothing about the adventures and battles between Asen and giants, nothing about Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods.
The texts published here are based on the original texts of Simrock's translation. In many places, terms are explained directly to the reader in detail and marked by the editor in marginal columns, and actions are made comprehensible.
The editor Walter Hansen (*1934), a freelance writer since 1970, has been an expert on Germanic mythology for many years. Among many other works, his books on the Song of the Nibelungs and "Asgard - Entdeckungsfahrt in die germanische Götterwelt" stand out. His biography of Richard Wagner attracted a great deal of attention. His books have received many awards and have been translated into numerous languages.
