A hand-forged spark striker made of carbonized iron, as used in the early Middle Ages
A grave find from Bavaria served as a model for this medieval fire iron.
If the fire steel is struck against the sharp edge of a flint, sparks are created that jump over dry tinder and cause it to smoulder. In the past, so-called tinder sponges, which were obtained from tree sponges and made smouldering by soaking them in a saltpetre solution or rubbing them with black powder, were used as tinder.
