Care instructions for the oak barrel

This barrel was handcrafted in a manufactory in many steps with the support of machines. Please observe the following rules before first use or after a longer period of non-use:

- Due to the manufacturing process, there may be deviations of up to 20% from the specified dimensions.
- Wood is a natural product and "lives" with its environment. Wood has the ability to absorb and release moisture. During this process, the volume of the wood changes. Please place the barrel in a climate that is as balanced as possible without strong fluctuations in humidity. Furthermore, the barrel must not be exposed to low humidity for long periods of time, as otherwise the individual staves will shrink considerably. This causes gaps to form between the staves and the drum could leak. Furthermore, the film on the inside of the drum could tear and be irreparably damaged.
- We recommend washing the drum thoroughly with lukewarm water several times before use to wash out any dirt that may have accumulated. For safety reasons, please always place the barrel in a sufficiently large bowl or basin. The inside of the drum is partially covered with a drum film, which additionally seals the drum from the inside. This film consists of food-safe kerosene wax and is therefore harmless to health. The color and taste of the contents may change due to the contact of the liquid with the oak wood.
- After the barrel tap has been in the water for 4 hours, you can gently tap it into the tap opening with a wooden or rubber mallet. Then fill the barrel with water again and leave it to stand for approx. 12 hours in a sufficiently large container. This will cause the base and staves to swell and seal the barrel. Do not insert the stopper during soaking, otherwise it will be difficult to remove. We recommend permanently leaving a drip vessel under the barrel tap.
- Finally, you can drain the water and fill the barrel with the desired contents. Filling with vinegar, carbonated drinks and spirits over 50% is not recommended. The oak barrel is not suitable for storing perishable drinks. As there is generally no sterile environment or protective atmosphere when the liquid is poured into the barrel, contamination or mold growth may occur, as can also be the case with other open containers and beverage packaging. Therefore, please always observe the shelf life information and the instructions for consumption after opening the original packaging.
- In the rare event of a leak between the tap and the drilled hole, the tap should be driven deeper into the keg. Otherwise, you can also eliminate a leak by using barrel sealant. Barrel sealant can be purchased from various online stores and specialist retailers. If the barrel tap is leaking liquid, you can seal the fibers of the barrel tap with hot wax. To do this, dry the barrel tap slowly at room temperature and dip the end that is inserted into the barrel into hot, food-safe wax.
- Please repeat the soaking process if the barrel has been empty and dry for a long time.
