The sickle is considered to be one of the oldest farming tools in the world. Its traces reach far back into the Neolithic Age, and it is still used today for cutting small quantities of grain, herbs or grass, among other things. For the farmers of the Middle Ages, this tool with a crescent-shaped blade, sharpened on the inside and a handle bent backwards, was an absolutely indispensable agricultural implement used for harvesting grain and collecting animal feed for the cold months.

The sickle is also often associated with witches, healers and Celtic druids. They are said to have been known to roam the woods with sickle (or boline) in hand to gather mistletoe and medicinal herbs and plants for their potions.

Our medieval sickle is made of carbon steel. The 2 mm flat steel blade was forged by hand. The tip is rounded and the edge has only been slightly sharpened by hammering (or hammering). The forging marks have been deliberately preserved to give the sickle a rustic, authentic character. The handle made of 5 mm square steel is elegantly curved and ends with a small spiral. It is twisted in places, which not only gives it a beautiful appearance, but also provides a better grip. Thanks to its special shape, it can be easily attached to the garment and also offers scope for individual design, such as leather wrapping.

This beautiful piece of blacksmithing is perfect for everyday camp life in medieval re-enactment and will make any depiction of a farmer, herbalist or even a druid look even more authentic.

Please note:
The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen. As this sickle is a hand-forged product, no two pieces are the same! Slight deviations in shape and/or surface due to manual work are quite normal, and the above illustrations are therefore only intended as examples.
The steel used here is not rustproof and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regular maintenance of the sickle, e.g. with Ballistol, a universal oil that is ideal for preserving steelware.
